本編の写真を撮影したのは実際にファシリティドッグが常勤する静岡県立こども病院と神奈川県立こども医療センターに入院中の子どもたち。病棟という限られた空間、さまざまな制限が多いなか(車椅子、点滴中のお子さんも参加されました)10人の”こどもカメラマン”たちが撮影した、写真の数々を楽しんでいただけます。
もちろん、写真家の桐島ローランドさんが撮影した愛溢れるファシリティドッグとハンドラーたちの写真の数々も。病院で毎日活躍するファシリティドッグたちの素顔と愛くるしい表情満載です。
“こどもカメラマン”が撮った写真には、劇作家で脚本家の藤沢文翁さんによるハートフルな文章がつけられ、素敵な”フォトエッセイ”が出来上がりました。巻末には両病院の院長先生、総長先生からの心温まるコメントもいただきました。

This 92 page, full color photo essay features photography by children in 2 unique hospitals in Japan, where they are lucky to have a friend there with them through their difficult treatments, a Facility Dog. A hospital is a strict environment; there is no running allowed, sick children cannot play outside, some kids are confined to their bed. But you will be surprised to see the fun that these 10 “kid cameramen” are having.

The book also includes photography by Rowland Kirishima, who snaps shots of the Facility Dogs handlers brimming with love for their dogs because of the happiness they bring to children everyday. All photos are captioned in English and Japanese, with original poetry by Bun-O Fujisawa.

Shine On! Kids’ Facility Dog Program improves treatment outcomes and children’s approach to medical treatment through Japan’s first, full-time Animal Assisted Therapy program at a children’s hospital. A specially trained therapy dog is paired with a dedicated nurse handler to make a new kind of medical team that is there every day to make life in the hospital a little brighter. Patients are encouraged and comforted by the dog’s wonderful, non-judgmental nature and benefit both physically and emotionally from their daily interactions with them.
